IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT
When I first saw the phrase "In this life or the next", I interpreted it the same way most fans seem to do, that is, the phrase emphasises the promise of, support the OCS members have for each other, no matter If it's "in this life or the next". But then, I started to wonder. Why is it not in this life and the next, wouldn't that genuinely highlight their connections, their vows?
But the phrase is perfect. Because while "In this life and the next "leads your mind to the next, "In this life or the next" lets you stay on this life. Which serves the true purpose of the phrase, to help the members overcome death anxiety and existential crisis. After all, connections are to serve a great deal in countering existential loneliness and devoting their life to the OCS means they could be sacrificing their life and for a cause.
The phrase accentuates not only the support on dangerous missions but also their shared existential purpose, the agreement in an afterlife and the continued loyalty.
